Most Guilford residents talk about the year in two halves: the summer that runs on the Green and the fall that runs on the orchards. That mental split misses something. For a short stretch starting the last week of August, the two calendars share the same page. The Thursday farmers market is still going. Sunday concerts are still on. And Bishop's has already flipped the switch on the Fall Festival before the Guilford Fair caps the season.

The mechanical reason this stretch feels different from July or October is that four town-scale events run simultaneously for about two weeks. After Sept 10, one of the anchors goes away. After Sept 20, another two do. Here is what actually runs when.

Two Sundays and two Thursdays are all you get with everything running at once. The concert lineup that closes it out is The Cartells on Aug. 9, Larger Than Life Boyband & Entertainment on Aug. 16, and The Men of Soul on Aug. 23, all under the Summer Sunday Concerts on the Green program from Guilford Parks & Rec. The Thursday market at 111 Lovers Lane keeps its 4–7 PM slot straight through until Sept. 10. Nothing else in the year gives you a Thursday-into-Sunday rhythm quite this dense.
What actually changed at Bishop's this year
If your Bishop's routine is on autopilot, two things are worth knowing before you drive over.
First, the address matters more than it used to. The Fall Festival is at the main orchard, and the retail store you probably think of when someone says "Bishop's" is a separate stop. The Farm Market & Creamery at 1355 Boston Post Road is where the fresh produce, bakery, prepared foods, and over 20 ice cream flavors live. The Festival itself, at the main orchard at 480 New England Road, is the pickings-and-activities operation. If you have out-of-town family arriving for a fall weekend, that distinction saves an unnecessary loop.
Second, the corn maze has a theme this year that most locals would not guess. The maze highlights Connecticut's recent recognition as the "Pizza Capital of the U.S." in partnership with the New Haven Pizza Club, with pizza-themed attractions and photo spots alongside the activity area's slides, bounce pads, and pedal karts. A new Cider Hut & Garden opened last September and pours hard cider and Bishop's wines on tap for visitors age 21 and older, which quietly turned the Festival into a place adults linger instead of a place they chaperone.
A pricing note that gets missed: weekday admission to the orchard is free, and the activity area and corn maze run $15 on weekdays ($13 if purchased online) and $18 on weekends ($15 online). If you have a flexible Tuesday, the same experience costs less and comes without the weekend crowd.
Where to eat after Sunday concerts wrap
The concerts end at 8 PM. Downtown Guilford is a five-minute walk from the Green, and the last two years have quietly shifted what your options look like at 8:15 on a Sunday night.
- Char & Lemon, 2 Water St. Wood-fired pizza and Neapolitan pies in the former Amarone space. First Selectman Matt Hoey told Patch when the deal was announced that the downtown area has become restaurant central over the last few years and continues to draw people in, that Amarone going out of business left a hole in a very highly visible place, and that seeing another restaurant come into that facility adds another element of choice for folks dining out downtown. Sunday hours run 11:30 AM to 9 PM, so a post-concert table is possible if you move promptly.
- Bufalina, 1070 Boston Post Road. A shorter menu than most and it fills up. The site itself flags that they highly recommend calling early for take-out and reservations based on limited dough capacity, and Wednesday-through-Saturday hours end at 8 PM. Sunday concert nights are not a Bufalina night. Slot it into a Thursday market run instead.
- The Place, 901 Boston Post Road. The outdoor seafood spot with the tree-stump seating is a specific kind of Guilford ritual and it does not run year-round. Regular hours are May through October unless noted, with Sunday service from 12 PM to 9 PM. If you have been meaning to bring someone this year, the overlap window is the last easy chance.
A quiet piece of local knowledge: parking on Sunday concert nights fills the Whitfield Street side first. The lot behind the shops off Church Street usually still has spots at 6:20, and it puts you closer to Water Street when the show ends.
The fair is the bracket, not the finale
If the overlap window has a closing weekend, it is not the last concert on Aug 23. It is the Guilford Fair, Connecticut's 2nd oldest agricultural fair, established in 1859, held each year during the third full weekend in September on the Fairgrounds in historic Guilford. This year gates open Friday September 18, 2026, and the event runs through Sunday the 20th.
The fair is worth thinking about differently than the market that shares its address. The Thursday market is a weekly errand. The fair is the only weekend of the year when the Fairgrounds go from a farmers-market parking lot to a full carnival footprint. If you have kids who have outgrown the bounce pads at Bishop's but still want a midway, this is the swap.
One October date to hold
The overlap window closes, and then one more event lands on the Green before the town settles into orchard weekends and Halloween. Earlier this spring the Guilford Board of Selectmen voted April 6 to grant conditional approval for the return of the "Gilmore Girls" fan fest, known as "The Firelight Event," to the Town Green in October. Whether or not you have opinions about the show, the practical effect is that a specific October weekend will bring a much larger visitor volume to downtown than a normal fall Saturday. If you were planning to eat at Char & Lemon or Bufalina that weekend, book early. If you were planning to avoid the Green entirely, watch for the date announcement.
Why the calendar shape matters
Most towns have a summer season and a fall season. Guilford has a hinge. For roughly two weeks after Aug 3, four separate town-scale events run at once, and every one of them takes place inside a mile of the Green or on the same Fairgrounds parcel. That is a specific kind of walkable density that does not exist in July, when the market and concerts are running but Bishop's is still in a summer produce mode, and it does not exist in October, when the concerts are done and the market is closed.
The takeaway is not that August is better than October in Guilford. It is that late August through mid-September is the one part of the year when you do not have to choose between summer routines and fall routines. You get both, and the fair closes the bracket cleanly on Sept 20.
